Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are off to a somewhat awkward start to their relationship with Aston Martin after Michael Schumacher was exposed from the latter upon the team’s launch. Alonso looked stunned when his new team-mate admitted he was a fan of the seven-time champion when he watched F1 growing up – and backed the German over Alonso.
Stroll revealed he always cheered Schumacher when the German was racing with Alonso. The joke came about after Stroll’s young fan Noah asked him who his favorite F1 idol would be when he grew up.
The Canadian quickly replied, “Michael Schumacher. You know what, I was just a fan of the sport growing up. I loved racing. I watched Fernando in my childhood years, and he was the guy who wins races and championships. I’m not going to lie, I was cheering for Michael at the time.”
“But I’m really happy to have Fernando in the team now and I’m really excited to work together.”

Speaking at the launch, Alonso added: “It’s been pretty amazing to be honest. The last few months we’ve been in touch. Since January I’ve been here at the factory. Some simulation sessions, meeting new people and visiting the new faculties that will be ready soon.
“I feel this energy, and a lot of things are happening in the team now. New people joined the technical department last year, new factory, new wind tunnel soon, new driver. So everything is in order and I can’t wait to drive.”
Alonso sparked a joyous driver after announcing his decision to leave the Alps for Aston Martin last season. The Alpine leaders claimed to be surprised by the move but quickly promoted Oscar Piastri to his race seat. However, the Australian rejected their offer because it turned out he had already struck a deal with McLaren.
