Carlos Alcaraz compared Roger Federer to Lionel Messi when he ignored the Swiss star and admitted that Rafael Nadal was his idol. The world No. 2 finally begins his season in Buenos Aires this week after being set back by injuries and debating the “Messi of tennis” while on the soil of World Cup-winning Argentina.
Alcaraz’s much-anticipated return at the Argentine Open this week, more than 100 days after playing his last match at the Paris Masters. The 19-year-old was injured in Paris and ended his 2022 season early before suffering a new injury in pre-season training that forced him to skip the Australian Open.
He then chose to enter the ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires for his comeback and was getting into the World Cup spirit while in Argentina as he explained why he thought Federer was the “Messi of tennis”. “Yes, Federer is the Messi of tennis because of his ease of play,” the US Open winner told Ole.
Alcaraz expressed his admiration for Messi’s achievements in the World Cup, saying: “Messi was the super hero of the World Cup and practically put himself in the whole country so that Argentina would dedicate itself in Qatar.”
