Chinese box office: “Post-Truth” wins the weekend

“Post-Truth,” a Chinese comedy about a cemetery conspiracy salesman trying to salvage his reputation in the face of online assaults, topped the box office in China over the weekend, ahead of another new release, “Revival.”

Data from consulting firm Artisan Gateway showed that Post-Truth earned $17.0 million between Friday and Sunday. Including the preview, it has a cumulative of $20.3 million. The crime drama, ‘Revival’ earned $10.3 million over the weekend and grossed $11.4 million including previews.

The two newcomers dominated the box office and moved the Hong Kong-produced courtroom drama “Guilty Conscience” to a distant third place. “Guilty” has taken in $2.3 million (CNY 15.8 million) for a total of $23 million since its February 24 release.

The remaining places in the top five continued to be occupied by films released on the Chinese New Year in January. “The Wandering Earth 2” earned 15.7 million yuan (nearly 2.3 million US dollars) for a total of 598 million US dollars (4.00 billion CNY).

“Boonie Bears: The Guardian Code” is in fifth place, earning $1.8 million cumulatively since its January 22 release, with $212 million.

Last week’s chart topper, Hong Kong’s “Internet Stealing” crashed off the chart.

The box office could look different again next week. American horror “M3GAN” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” are both set for release Friday, ahead of the weekend with seven new titles making their debuts Friday and Saturday.

Total gross nationwide revenue was $39.1 million, resulting in a year-to-date total of $2.11 billion. That’s 7.8% ahead of 2022 at the same point last year, according to Artisan Gateway.
