In bad but seemingly unavoidable news, Irish-Boxing reports that the big May match between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano who are all set for Dublin on May 20 will not happen as scheduled. According to Irish Boxing, Serrano has suffered a serious injury and will not be ready to be able to box as soon as possible. The word is the highly anticipated rematch of what has been called “The Greatest Women’s Fight Ever”; It will now be held in September this year.
Taylor will still be fighting on May 20, and a replacement opponent is now being sought. Taylor outlasted Serrano in a stellar fight at Madison Square Garden last summer, and almost immediately, fans were calling for a sequel to what was for many a fight of the year. Taylor, the reigning unified lightweight champion, is now hoping that the postponed Serrano rematch will take place in the massive Croke Park arena, the venue where Taylor has always wanted to fight.
As for who might be brought in to challenge undefeated Taylor on May 20, names like Michaela Mayer, Heather Hardy, Estelle Mosley and Natasha Jonas are said to be in the frame. We’ll wait and see what happens, but one of the above ladies may soon discover they’re getting a real dream fight on their own, and surprisingly enough.
Postponements are of course an inevitable part of the sport we all love, and at this point in time, all we can do is hope Serrano makes a full recovery from whatever injury she sustained. Taylor-Serrano II A fight that’s too good to happen! Still looking forward to her homecoming, Taylor’s female star hasn’t boxed in at home as a pro before now.
