Broncos coach Kevin Walters peeks Selwyn Cobbo after his three-pointer in the Indigenous All Stars win.

Kubo overcame a shaky start to Saturday’s game to score three tries in 12 minutes and play a crucial role in the Indigenous side’s first win since 2019.

It was the start of the year that the 20-year-old needed after he made headlines for his infamous comments about Walters on a podcast.

“He’s a good guy, like a good guy but I don’t think he’s a good coach. He’s not the best coach but he’s fine,” Kubo said. 135 appeared Podcast.

Walters said at the time that Kubo’s “disappointing” comments “certainly hurt” — and lashed out at the young winger, who was fined $15,000 by the Broncos, after the club’s test match.

Walters was asked about Kubo’s All-Star performance after a 24-game tie with the Titans.

“Yeah, it was great to see Selwyn do that…he’s well trained,” he said with a smile, V.I News Corp.

“It’s getting better all the time.

“Selwyn showed some good skills again on the field, so he must have had some good training I thought.”

It’s not the first time Cope has slipped up – he was fined for driving without a license last year and also fell behind in the captain’s race when the season was on the line.

The couple talked about the incident on a podcast with Walters telling News Corp: “I know he didn’t mean what he said… We both moved forward.”

Walters is confident Kubo is “more stable and mature” this year and points to his All-Star performance as evidence.

“Not only do we teach Selwyn that, we teach all of our players that and some take it faster than others,” Walters said, referring to Kobbo’s return from two early fouls.

“He showed his true class in that last quarter.

“From what I’ve seen so far, Selwyn is much more stable and more mature than this time last year.

“We can’t fault him in the preseason, he had a whirlwind off the field last year, but this year he was on time, ready to go, and next week we’ll take a look at what he’s capable of for the Broncos in the 2023 season.”
