It was said that some members of the board were advocating for Mercedes to give the Hamilton seat to Russell, who was at Williams at the time.
With Russell now in the team, it will be interesting to see the reaction if the 25-year-old ends up passing the supposed number one driver again.
Mercedes is not expected to compete for the drivers’ championship again this year.
That could prompt Hamilton to make up his mind to walk away if he had the chance to enter a winning car and claim his eighth world title.
