Razzie Awards 2023: ‘Blonde’, Tom Hanks and Jared Leto earn Best Dishonors

The Razzies have admitted to the elephant in the room at the 2023 Awards — the organization gave itself a disgrace after a 12-year-old was nominated for worst actress, sparking controversy online.

Ahead of the Academy Awards on Sunday to celebrate the year’s greatest achievements in cinema, the 43rd annual Razzie celebrates the worst actors and movies.

This year’s Razzie nominations have been mired in controversy over the award body’s nomination of 12-year-old actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong from Firestarter in January. After the Internet erupted, the Razzies apologized, removing Armstrong from the ballot and introducing an age limit of 18 for future nominations. Al-Razi put himself on the ballot, replacing Armstrong, and won in a landslide. In the awards video, Raz Perry said, “Until our next mistake, cheers!” Accepting shame.

“Blonde” took home the major infamy award, taking home worst picture as well as worst screenplay. “Elvis” also got two Razzies for Tom Hanks as worst supporting actor and “Tom Hanks and his latex-laden face (and Ludicrous accent)” as worst screen combination. With Hanks’ Razzie, he joins the list of Razzie and Oscar winners including Eddie Redmayne, Halle Berry, Jared Leto, and Nicole Kidman.

“Morbius” also took home two awards for Worst Actress, Adria Arjona, and Worst Actor, Leto, which was his second win for Razzie.

“Disney’s Pinocchio,” not to be confused with “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” was named worst remake, and Oscar-nominated actor Colin Farrell won a Razzie Redeemer for his work in “The Banshees of Inisherin” after being nominated for worst actor in 2005. About Alexander the Great.

The Razzies have continued the virtual format post-COVID, announcing the winners in a video less than five minutes long. Industry leaders John J. P. Wilson and Mo Murphy founded the Golden Raspberry Foundation to recognize the “worst movies of the year,” with the first in-person ceremony held in 1981. A voter must pay a membership fee to vote for Razzies, though there is no requirement to watch certain films.
