Although former WBO middleweight champion Savannah Marshall was comprehensively beaten by bitter rival Clarissa Shields in her big fight last October, as undefeated Shields consolidated the 160-pound titles with a win, Marshall still believes she can beat Shields. Not only that, but Marshall, speaking to Sky Sports, says she can “send” Shields.
This was not the case in October, and Marshall suggested that the tactics Coach Peter Fury gave her had a lot to do with her defeat. “Fury hasn’t been my favorite person for the past couple of months,” says Marshall.
Marshall says a rematch with Shields will happen, and that she’s more than happy to go to America for the sequel, it’s just a case of whether or not she gets into a fight before entering with Shields a second time.
“The rematch is there for me. It’s just whether or not there’s going to be a fight, that’s what I’m waiting for, to see what the next plan is for me,” Marshall said. “I’d go straight to it, sure, but I’d take anything. There is always the business side to boxing, and it needs to be built on. Honestly, I can outsmart Clarissa, I really can. tactics [in the October fight] It was completely against my strength. I think this is for Peter Fury (for explaining the choice of tactics). But it’s a team effort, right? I can’t blame him, but he hasn’t been my favorite person for the past two months.”
Marshall went on to say that Shields, 13-0(2), “doesn’t sell in America,” adding that it was “sad but true.” Why not sell Shields? “Because her attitude is disgraceful,” Marshall stated.
That’s another story, but in terms of who would win if the rematch happened (and it would probably be the biggest fight out there for both ladies) – can you see any outcome other than what we saw in a single fight? Fury might be able to tweak Marshall’s game plan a bit, but is it enough that Marshall was able to outsmart Shields, the master boxer? Good luck with that. But credit to Marshall, 12-1 (10) for wanting to have that comeback fight, for trying to get it right. But having said what she said about Fury, one can only hope that Marshall’s working relationship with her trainer remains cordial and leads to success.
