Brake alert: This story contains spoilers for “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”, which is currently playing in theaters.
Zachary Levi returns as Billy Baston / Shazam in “Shazam! Wrath of the Gods”. In the DC superhero sequel, three vengeful witches called the Daughters of Atlas — led by Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Calypso and Rachel Ziegler as Anthea — want to avenge their father and restore the power of the gods they believe was stolen from Shazam and his crew.
David F. Sandberg, in true superhero fashion, directs Pepper’s Feast eggs throughout the film for the most savvy superhero fans.
Here are just a few that we spotted.
“The Fast and the Furious”
Warner Bros
In one scene, Shazam and Hespera sit down and he tells her, “Listen, I may not have as much experience as you because I’m not as old as you, but I’ve seen all the Fast and Furious ‘movies'”, referring to Meryn’s role as Queenie in the long-running racing series .
Shazam then jokes, “It’s all about the family.”
Annabel
Warner Bros
This isn’t the first time that Annabelle, that gruff, haunted doll, has appeared in the DC Extended Universe movies.
Annabelle has been previously spotted in the movies ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Shazam’. This time, the creepy doll is making a guest appearance at the pediatrician’s office.
Sandberg directed the 2017 movie Annabelle: Creation.
Fulci aka Lucio Fulci
On the subject of horror… Sandburg honors Italian horror director Lucio Fulci with a banner cleverly placed in the background. Dubbed “Gore’s Godfather,” his films include “A Cat in the Brain,” “Don’t Torture a Duck,” “Black Cat,” and “The Beyond,” which Sandberg revealed was his favorite of Fulci’s films.
Iconoclasm
Warner Bros
Back in 2019, Sandberg’s older brother, video game developer Joakim ‘Konjak’ Sandberg, was featured in the Shazam! In the sequel, Ian Chen’s character, Eugene, wears an “icon-smashing” T-shirt, a reference to Joakim’s 2018 platformer.
S for Starro
Warner Bros
In the same scene as the creepy Annabelle doll, Starro the Conqueror, the starfish-like creature from “The Suicide Squad,” appears on the alphabet wall next to the letter S.
Batman and Wonder Woman
There are a lot of nods throughout the movie to the Caped Crusader. Billy has a mug with the Batman logo on it, as well as a sketch of the superhero on his bedroom wall.
Also shown (in plush form) is a treasure trove of Easter eggs in the pediatrician’s office, behind Annabelle’s. Additionally, there are two Wonder Woman games.
A television commercial released prior to the film’s opening revealed Gal Gadot’s appearance as Wonder Woman in “Fury of the Gods”.
