The first shocker of the NCAA playoffs did indeed happen when Furman scored a last-second three-pointer to eliminate Virginia. Virginia entered the game as a strong favourite, although it was a tougher match than expected. They led by two points and had the ball in their hands as the clock ticked away, but Kehey Clarke tipped it wide and gave Foreman a chance to win the game.
Instead of clearing the ball to safety or just keeping the ball, Clarke shockingly threw the ball to Garrett Hayne, who set up J.B. Beggis for the three and the win. It was the last action in the game, and #4 seed Virginia was already out.
It was a stunning finish to an exciting match, with Foreman sealing the win with 2.2 seconds remaining on the game clock. Virginia’s players couldn’t believe it, so many put their hands on their heads while making the three-pointer.
Foreman is in the championship for the first time since 1980, and they’ve proven they’re not just there to make up the numbers. And Biggie’s assists were his career so far, especially since he was 0-3 from behind the line during the game.
While it was the #4 ranked Virginia, Foreman entered the clash with #13, but it just goes to show that anything can happen. March Madness is certainly in full swing, and Virginia’s under-scoring tactics have ruined it.
According to March Madness media coordinator David Warlock, the win over Virginia marked the second time Furman has ever won the tournament. Their first success came in 1974, when they beat South Carolina in the first round.
Virginia tried to swing the score again desperately, as Reese Beckman managed to get a shot when the buzzer sounded. However, he bounced off the backboard and then the rim, before Foreman was bowled onto the court in celebration.
Foreman will play either not. 5 seeded san diego state or not. 12th seed Charleston are in the second round on Saturday, as they look to build on their success. It’s an even bigger disappointment for Virginia, who also lost out as a no. 4 seeds through the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
